Virginia MOCA Read(s) Books: Kindred by Octavia Butler
Join Virginia MOCA Executive Director, Gary Ryan and Kristin Hildum, Founder of Read Books, for a discussion of the book Kindred by author Octavia Butler. Butler’s visionary masterpiece pulls us, along with her Black female hero, through time to face the horrors of slavery and explore the impacts of racism, sexism, and white supremacy then and now.
We will explore themes of social justice while connecting the book to works of art featured in the current Virginia MOCA exhibition SHIFTING GAZE: A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BLACK & HISPANIC BODY IN CONTEMPORARY ART from the Collection of Dr. Robert B. Feldman.
The book club kicks off with a virtual tour of SHIFTING GAZE: A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE BLACK & HISPANIC BODY IN CONTEMPORARY ART and an introduction to Kindred. Following the virtual tour, participants will receive weekly emails with discussion topics and artwork connections. The culminating gathering will be a virtual group discussion of the book.
