OPEN CALL FOR DRAWINGS FOR THE NEXT SCULPTURE IN VIBE

June 16, 2023 - June 24, 2023

OPEN CALL FOR DRAWINGS FROM THE PUBLIC — OPEN TO ALL AGES 6 years and older

STEP 1 – Read this and Watch the Video

This video is for educational purposes only as a prompt to encourage community members of all ages to create a drawing that may be selected for a quilt-inspired public art project. Multimedia artist and educator Amber Piece and Graphic Designer Matthew Piece will collaborate on a final quilt design utilizing images from local students and the open call. The final design will be professionally printed and installed on wooden arches as a temporary public art installation in the ViBe Creative District that shares community themes and message via the history of quilt designs. Selected artists will be notified if their work is included.

Lead project partners include the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, YELLOW, Altruistic Design and ViBe Creative District. Students who participated in the project visited a display of quilts from the 54-40 African American Quilters Guild of Virginia on display at Virginia MOCA and toured the public art in the ViBe Creative District.

Open call artists are encouraged to watch this video to gain similar inspiration prior to creating their drawing. The exhibit and this presentation help illustrate how quilts do not just serve as a basic function of keeping people warm, but are works of collaborative art, help build community and carry a unique history of our culture.
