CALL FOR ARTISTS:

One artist and artwork will be selected for a new painted crosswalk at 21st 1/2 Street and Cypress Avenue in the ViBe Creative District. The prior crosswalk artwork was painted in 2019 by local artist Katerin Goold.

ARTIST STIPEND:

The City of Virginia Beach Public Art Committee will select an artist / artwork for this project on City property. The ViBe Creative District will pay the artist $1,000 and provide all paint and materials to complete the project. Sherwin Williams Pro-Park Traffic Paint will be provided in primary colors only– the artists will need to mix their additional colors on site. Paint provided will be white, black, red, yellow and blue.

TIMELINE:

The artist will be selected at the August 30, 2024 Public Art Committee Meeting. All artists who apply will be notified by Sept 6, 2024. The ViBe Creative District will then work with the City of Virginia Beach Special Events team and the chosen artist to schedule the crosswalk painting in September 2024. Due to required road closures for safety when painting, the artist will need to be flexible on date availability– one weekday or weekend day from 8am to 3pm. The artist is required to bring at least 2 people to assist in the painting.

On the day of painting, the road closure will begin at 8am. The artist will prep the area and their paints from 8am to 930am. The team of volunteers and artist will paint the crosswalk from 930-330pm and let it dry from 230pm-8pm when the road reopens to the public. The artist is required to be on site until the artwork is completed.

APPLY NOW:

Artist must provide an artwork proposal that is square in orientation to match the center block crosswalk area on 21st 1/2 St. The crosswalk is roughly 45 feet tall by 40 feet wide in orientation, but the corners are curved where the sidewalks meet the road. See images below.
